What real places are the different areas in the continent based on? Zerrikania is probably Africa or the middle east. Skellige is Scotland (or Scandinavia?). Nilfgaard might be Italy? What about the rest of northern kingdoms?
I would say Skellige is more Irish than Scottish. I read somewhere a while ago (pretty sure it was in this fandom) that their looks and custom is likely derived from the Nordic-celts. Which yes was Scotland and Ireland but their accent certainly sounds Irish.
Nilfgaard on the other hand, I would say they are more Nordic? Going off accent anyway. Though there are definitely likenesses to ancient Rome
As as for the other realms, I’ve read that Redania is based on Poland because of the crest, could be true but I’m not sure of much likeness? As for the crest it is the exact same as the cap badge I wore in the British army. Named the Prussian eagle, but seeing as the writer is polish maybe it was supposed to be based on this. But the Prussian eagle is everywhere in history.
I actually think that Kaer Morhen is based on Poland.
It’s clear there is a lot of likenesses to different European countries, but cultures have been mixed.
All my opinion though.
Skellige most likely based on the fact that they are divided in Jarls and have "Vking" ships I'd have to say scandinavians, as in the og vikings, from whitch the scots irish and brits come from(well partly at least).
Nilfaard, german empire defo, or should I say holy roman empire(Not the same as the actual roman empire, more like a Byzantine empire, an empire "descendant" from the actual romans.)
Redania I mean it's a mix of many european kingdoms, but I if I had to choose a country it has to be france, armor is not that far from the historical armor(not the colors tho) also the witch inquisition was a pretty big thing in france, and well... church of the eternal fire.
Kadwen seems to be a bit more anglicon style then again we don't have that much to go on.
Kovir, most likely switzerland, there's little to no info be it visual or otherwise on Kovir but based on the fact that A. They live in a mountinous area. B. They have lots of golds and ritches. C. They value their neutrality and are a force to be reconed with in case somebody really wants to declare war on them, I'm pretty positive it's Switzerland.
Zerrakania, deserts, jungles, I'm going to guess egypt/arrabia.
Offeir, we know for a certainty it is led by sultans and also that they have plenty of silky clothes, in the colour blue especially, at first glance I would dare compare them to the Otomans but by the sound of it they also live in deserts and considering their Scimtar design whitch is not really like the Jannisaies(Ottoman empire soldiers) scimtar I have to say persia.
Northern Kingdoms might resemble parts of France, Germany and Poland.
Book version of Zerrikania is actually more like Scythia
Based on what @SMiki55? We have little to no information about it, we know it has tropical climate in some arreas and that the Korath Desert is really close/ part of it.
Not even to mention the fact that Scythia was mostly in a green plains and mountinaous area(Yes Zerrakania has mountains but that's not enogh for them to be similar) in regards climate and positioning and have little to no deserts or tropical areas, also Scythians were a thing in the ancient era, and not a state is even resembling an ancient culture in Witcher since they're obviously past that era. The only region that is somewhat viable is the Indo-Sythian region but that is a long stretch, and still culturally they have 0 resemblance.
There is no info of tropical climate in the books and Korath in terms of geography is more akin to Gobi or North American deserts rather than Sahara. Fair haired horse archers living in clans with women in high position scream "Scythians" from afar.
@SMiki55 Zerrikania is a vast realm located to the east of both Northern Kingdoms and Nilfgaardian Empire.[N 1] Isolated from the westerners by mountain ranges, deserts and wastelands, it is often perceived as a mysterious land of warrior women, dragon cults and exotic beasts.
Exact description of Zerrikania from this wiki, Scythia had barely any desert territory if at all. Also my previous arguments whitch you didin't even touch and some new ones if you still need proof I really know what I'm talking about:
Scythia was in ancent times not medieval.
Horses were a big thing in the eurasian region too, ever heard of "Arabian" horses, one of the oldest horses in the world and they are similar to the book description.
We don't have info on jungles, IN THE BOOKS but here I was talking about the greater cannon which is games+books(I know the games are not cannon to the books but to be frank I couldn't care less since this wiki wouldn't exist whitout the games probably, and neither the games whitout the books of course so Im taking into account both) And I'm sorry but nor Tigers nor Panthers could be found or can at the moment(If you don't count zoos) even on one square meter of the entire known Scythian inhabited lands.
Strong female warriors, yea it was a thing historically mainly in Scythia, but this time I doubt it's even remotely insipired from them, I think it's more likely this is the fantasy trope of arabic civilization that has strong female warriors too also leaders, look at Hammerfell in Elder Scrolls and Dorne from Game of Thrones, 100% arabic insipred and also plenty of strong females there and a lot of female leaders.
We know they use Scimtars and weapons that are made of Alloys at least as strong as steel(Whitch is deducted form the fact most nations have that alloy by now including Offeir whitch is a neighbour of Zerrikania.) Scythians used short straight swords made of Iron, which mind you when Schytians were a thing that was when that metal started to be used.
I don't wanna pretend I'm a knowall or something I'm not. But I think I studied history enough to know what I'm talking about. The only state which meets most of the criteria is the Arrabian Peninsula historically and geographically not to mention the most obvious giveaway that the author inspired himself from arabia. I mean for crying out loud the name is a pun basically.
What do you think?
