Amidst the Mill's Grist is a secondary quest in the Blood and Wine expansion.
Note: The 
rewards in this quest will decrease after reaching level 52 (48 before Patch 4.0).
Important: this quest has a small time window: it only becomes available after finishing the main quest, La Cage au Fou, and must be completed before finishing the next main quest, Where Children Toil, Toys Waste Away, or else it will no longer be available.
Walkthrough[]
After the quest La Cage au Fou, go to Count de la Croix's Mill to overhear some peasants talking about running off with flour from the mill. They'll attack as soon as they see you and the quest starts after you kill them. Despite being peasants though, they can be really tough enemies, particularly because of the weapons they use.
Head inside the mill to find footprints, as well as Mill for Sale notes (there's one outside the door, one inside, and a third on the door of the small building opposite). Read one of them, then follow the footprints upstairs to discover a large bloodstain on the top floor and examine it.
The quest completes once both the Mill for Sale note is read and the bloodstain is examined. (400)
Journal entry[]
- In the vision Geralt had experienced after imbibing Resonance, he had also seen a mill. He soon reached this site and explored it thoroughly. After all, Dettlaff had recently been there himself. The witcher hoped to find clues that would lead him to the murderer.
- If Geralt investigates completely:
- Using his Witcher Senses, Geralt thoroughly searched the mill. It had been the property of one Count de la Croix, who had put it up for sale. And it was here that the unfortunate count had met his end, murdered in cold blood.
- If Geralt doesn't investigate completely:
- The witcher had found some interesting clues, yet he decided to continue the investigation elsewhere. He thus abandoned the lead he had found, related to Dettlaff's visit to the mill.

- Use your Witcher Senses to search the mill for clues.
Notes[]
- The reason why this quest has such a short window to find and complete is because it's not supposed to be encountered by accident. If you've found the location previously, you should be able to recognize it in the vision at the end of La Cage au Fou and come to the mill to look for clues on your own accord.
- On the second floor, there is also an Orders for Flour note, but it doesn't have a functional purpose.
Bugs[]
- The quest can sometimes be bugged, especially if you have been exploring the mill and looting the Mill for Sale notes before starting it. In that case, it won't complete after examining the bloodstain, although though it should be apparent that something's wrong when Geralt says nothing when looking at the footsteps either. It will essentially be stuck and ultimately fail once you progress the main story.
- If you want to avoid failing the quest, you can either reload an earlier save, preferrably from before exploring the mill and/or before completing La Cage au Fou, or (since you may have played for quite some time between doing so and completing La Cage au Fou) not trigger it in the first place.
- On PC, a console command additem('q702_leaflet') can be used to add the note, therefore completing the quest.
