"Do you really wish to know?" — Spoilers from the books and/or adaptations to follow!

Artorius Vigo was a mage and a member of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers, as well as the uncle of Fringilla Vigo.

Biography[]

Sending Yennefer to Nilfgaard[]

The Chapter gathered to discuss their concern with Cintra refusing to use their mages, with King Dagorad having banned mages from Cintra entirely. Stregobor heard rumors that the king was ill. Should he die, perhaps his heir, Princess Calanthe, would be more inclined to accept their mages. However, Tissaia was doubtful. Artotius questioned Nilfgaard's position. Stregobor criticized King Fergus for squandering the kingdom's money on women while his people starve to death. Fringilla, Artotius' niece, would be in Nilfgaard by week's end, and Tissaia assured everyone that she would bring sanity and bread to the kingdom, however, Stregobor had little faith in her. Artorius suggested sending someone with a bit more "spine" to Nilfgaard, and Stregobor recommended Yennefer since they'd be spitting in Dagorad's face to send her to Aedirn. The only thing Cintra hated more than mages was elves, and Yennefer was a quarter-elf. Tissaia was very much against sending Yennefer to Nilfgaard, accusing Artorius of nepotism, sparing his niece of her duties. The chapter decided to put it to a vote, and Yennefer was reassigned to Nilfgaard.

Artorius, Tissaia, Stregobor, and the rest of the Brotherhood gathered to initiate the new recruits, which Yennefer did not attend following her reassignment. However, she did attend the Aretuzan ball completely transformed. King Virfuril discarded Fringilla in favor of Yennefer, and the two danced center floor with Artorius, Stregobor, and Tissaia watching angrily.[1]

Conclave of northern mages[]

Artotius was among many mages to attend the conclave at Aretuza of Northern mages. He, Stregobor, and Tissaia led the conclave. Artorius and Stregobor had no desire to go to war with Nilfgaard. Especially not for Cintra, who rejected their mages for decades. However, Vilgefortz worried that more kingdoms would fall after Cintra as Nilfgaard wanted the entire continent. Rather than watching them fall, Tissaia wanted to help Cintra defeat Nilfgaard by convincing the kings to send their armies because if they didn't stop Nilfgaard now, more kingdoms would fall.

Fringilla arrived at the conclave and denounced any suspicion that Nilfgaard was planning to take over the continent. Under their new leader, Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, Nilfgaard had strengthened trade and funded research. Fringilla believed that in taking Cintra, they had a chance of saving the continent. If the Northern mages wouldn't take sides, Fringilla asked that they at least stay out her way. Fringilla then pointed out that if not for Yennefer, she never would've been assigned to Nilfgaard, and it wouldn't be the empire it is today. Artorius joked that had they sent Yennefer to Nilfgaard as planned, It would still be a "shitty backwater." Yennefer admitted this was true. Instead of Nilfgaard, she went to a prized kingdom and did "fuck all for decades." She helped murderers and rapists keep their crown. If given an option, she'd vote to burn it all down. The mages put it to a vote. Unfortunately, most side with Stregobor and Artorius to allow Cintra to fend for themselves.[2]

After the Battle of Sodden[]

Artorius was among the mages helping the wounded who suffered the Battle of Sodden. Artorius was helping Triss, who suddenly began to have convulsions, he was only able to calm her down thanks to the joint efforts of Tissaia and Vilgefortz. He inquires about the situation of his niece, Fringilla, and discovers that she not only commanded Nilfgaard's troops, but was also actively using forbidden magic against the Brotherhood. Vilgefortz tells Artorius about a high-ranking Nilfgaardian prisoner on whom Tissaia plans to use unconventional interrogation methods. When Artorius objects, reminding him that there are certain rules in the Brotherhood, Vilgefortz makes it clear that he is no longer in charge.

During Istredd's interrogation, Artorius tried to justify himself by saying that even an experienced mage, who had long worked in the excavations in Nilfgaard, did not notice the signs of an impending attack. However, this argument does not seem very convincing, since Vilgefortz and Tissaia warned everyone at the time. Artorius and Stregobor, who are still technically leaders of the Brotherhood, accompany the mages to a celebratory ceremony commemorating the victory at the Battle of Sodden. Faced with the kings of the North, Yennefer must execute a Nilfgaardian prisoner to prove her loyalty. Artorius opens the event and thanks the kings for the generous gift: an obelisk on which the names of the fallen magi are engraved; Vilgefortz then took on the role of keynote speaker.

When Sigismund Dijkstra arrives in Aretuza to tell them about the birth of a pure-blood elf child, Artorius agrees with Stregobor that this elf child is a potential enemy for them and, furthermore, is bound by an alliance with their main enemy. Vilgefortz does not miss the opportunity to poke Artorius once again, reminding him that his time has passed and that the leadership of the Brotherhood is no longer based on gossip and prejudice.

Later Artorius receives a visit from Fringilla. The last time they met was at the Conclave of Mages, when the Nilfgaardian sorceress lied to the Brotherhood about the empire's plans. He asks his uncle for help, drawing on his family connection, as his plan to unite with the elves appears to have failed and he will have to leave Nilfgaard to avoid the emperor's wrath. Artorius says that if Fringilla returns to the Brotherhood, she will have to apologize for her connection to Nilfgaard. She agrees to this, but when he implies that he can only follow orders and cannot influence anything, Fringilla leaves and decides to consider other options to get out of the current situation.

Mages Gathering in Thanedd[]

In Aretuza, members of the Chapter, including Artorius, discussed the differences that have arisen between the Northern kingdoms. King Henselt refuses to supply food to Temeria, and his advisor Sabrina can't do anything about it. Artorius requested that Triss return to King Foltest's court so that she can attempt to influence the situation from Temeria. But Triss herself prefers to stay in Aretuza and train a new generation of sorceresses.

At a council meeting, when Yennefer tried to convince the Brotherhood to organize a Conclave of Mages, Artorius was skeptical and even aggressive towards her, in which Stregobor invariably supports him. They compared the sorceress of Vengerberg to a "bone in the throat." However, by now their influence in the Brotherhood has weakened and most are inclined to side with Tissaia and Vilgefortz, who support Yennefer's idea.

During Aretuza's ball, while dancing with Artorius, Yennefer wondered if he will support her at the conclave tomorrow. The sorcerer replied that this option is possible, but at the same time he has not forgotten his past joke, as have the kings, who are now searching for a certain princess of Cintra, Cirilla. When Geralt and Yennefer expose Stregobor, Artorius has no choice but to oppose him and reproach him for choosing to go against his own people at a time when unity is needed.

Battle of Aretuza[]

When Philippa Eilhart and Dijkstra carried out their plan to neutralize the traitors, Artorius was among those in chains, serving as witnesses among them. This doesn't last long when Tissaia appeared and freed all the captive sorcerers. They easily confront Redania's supporters, but a much more difficult confrontation awaits them, because the Scoia'tael and Nilfgaardians, led by Francesca, Filavandrel and Cahir, have already stormed Aretuza.

Artorius fought alongside the other members of the Brotherhood. When Francesca, shocked by Filavandrel's terrible death, falls into a state of stupor, Margarita Laux-Antille called for Artorius to attack, but he did no time to do so. At this point, Fringilla joined the battle and mortally wounded her uncle with Filavandrel's dagger, killing him.
