"Why don't cats like you, Geralt? Does it have something to do with the-"
"Yes," he interrupted, "it does." |

Apart from dragons, cats are the only creatures known to absorb magical energy, but no one knows what they do with it.[1] They are also instantly able to recognize witchers and exhibit an obvious disdain for them, like hissing at them.[2] Cats can also see through invisibility.[3]
In the Japanese-inspired land, some cats when growing old transform into yōkai - powerful and mysterious entities and spirits - such as nekomata, whose tails split into two and they gain powers, and maneki neko, which become extremely lucky to be around. These spirits are worshipped by the population, with shrines built in places like Mount Kaijinzan.[4]
Notable cats[]
- Glutton, Nivellen's cat
- Nibbles, Tamara's cat[5]
- Puss in Boots[6]
- Merlin, Assire's cat
- Codringher and Fenn's cat
- Sorel Degerlund's cat
Notes[]
- There are also werecats,[7] large creatures that are half-human and half feline with powers to bind other similar beasts, such as panthers, to themselves.[8]
- In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, using the potestaquisitor (quest item) to find magical energy will lead Geralt to a nearby cat, leading to him uttering the lines "ah, there you are" or "damn cat, ffwshhht!".
- Like in certain real world cultures, seeing a black cat crossing one's path is considered a bad omen in the Witcher lore as well.[2]
