Chitinous shell is a crafting component in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt that is needed to craft cured draconid leather.
It is a random drop from all insectoid monsters except sandcrabs, and base game monster nests. As regular loot, chitinous shells can be found in three bandit camps on Ard Skellig - at the Whale Graveyard, at Giants' Toes, and the fishermen's camp east of Rannvaig. However, in the Blood and Wine expansion they appear in many treasure chests, both as random and guaranteed loot.
They can be purchased from the following merchants:
- All armorers and blacksmiths, except the one at Ardaiso Quarry
- Armors and weapons merchants in Nilfgaardian Army Group 'Center' Camp
- Merchant in the boatyard south of Refugees' Camp
- Merchant at Calveit Watchtower
- Merchant at Coast of Wrecks
- Merchant in Ursten
- Merchant by the road west of White Eagle Fort
- Merchant in the roadside camp south of Kaer Trolde
- Merchant in Kaer Trolde Harbor
- Merchant at the sawmill northeast of Rannvaig
- Merchant at the sawmill south of Sund
- Merchant at the Isolated Hut on Hindarsfjall
- Wandering merchants in Skellige
- Merchant in Mohrin Village
- Merchant in Stacheier
- Ofieri merchant at Upper Mill
Chitinous shells can also be obtained by dismantling all grandmaster level witcher gear chest armors and gauntlets except Forgotten Wolf School Gear (i.e. Blood and Wine expansion items only), all Hen Gaidth armor set and Tesham Mutna armor set armor pieces, and the following items:
