Citadel, once an old gnomish mountain fortress within Mount Cremora, was at one point converted into a laboratory by grandmaster mage Ortolan by 1245.[1]
History[]
The Citadel was believed to be an impenetrable location, having been built into the side of a mountain and, with Ortolan's added abilities, was given numerous magical protections, making it a suicide run if anyone tried to charge their way in.
However, there was one overlooked flaw: there were numerous caves on the eastern side of Mount Cremora of which one was known to be a backdoor into the old fortress. While this cave was difficult to find and had tight spots making it almost impossible for a grown man to squeeze through, nonetheless it still allowed a back way in.
In 1245, Ortolan's favorite and named successor, Sorel Degerlund, was given this location and placed under house arrest here for his actions at nearby Rissberg where he caused a "minor" scandal by killing over four dozen people in the region. However, as Rissberg mages tended to allow very controversial experiments, they instead sent him to the Citadel to make it look like they'd dealt with Sorel when, in reality, he was still allowed to continue other questionable experiments.
Geralt, set on killing the mage for his actions, was able to find the correct cave with Otto Dussart's help and, using the backdoor into the laboratory, killed Sorel.[1]
