Coen was a witcher of the School of the Wolf alongside Geralt, Eskel, and Lambert. In 1264, he helped train Ciri after she arrived at Kaer Morhen.

Biography[]

It's unclear how Coen arrived at the School of the Wolf, though he's one of the youngest witchers there. Over time, he became close pals with Lambert, with the two typically joking around and pulling pranks.[1]

Coen had already arrived back at Kaer Morhen for the winter in 1264 when Geralt arrived late with his Law of Surprise child, Princess Cirilla.[2] After Geralt began to train Ciri in the witcher ways and have her practice fighting against a straw dummy, Coen went along with Lambert as they picked on the princess, taunting that she wasn't fit to be a witcher before showing her the Pendulum, a dangerous obstacle course where one wrong move could seriously injure, if not kill, an ordinary person.[3] Coen then privately asked Lambert if he was sure about letting Ciri try it out but stood off to the side as his friend noted he was just having a little fun. They then watched as the princess tried to run the Pendulum but was quickly hit by one of the moving logs.

While Lambert further antagonized Ciri as she repeatedly tried but failed to get past the moving logs, Coen tried to talk Ciri into stopping and for them to head back to the keep, but this fell on deaf ears. Eventually Ciri did make it past the swinging logs successfully, which Coen was a bit impressed with, but when she then tried to dodge the multiple rotating blades of the next obstacle, she missed and was sliced across one of her arms as she fell. Coen then silently watched as Lambert remarked to Ciri that this obviously meant Kaer Morhen was no place for a princess. However, this only proved to further fuel Ciri to try and run the Pendulum.

Coen then ran back to the keep to get Geralt, telling him he needed to come see what was happening, and led Geralt and Vesemir out to the Pendulum and where Lambert was now trying to give the princess advice on running it again as several other witchers watched on. They then watched as she almost made it to the end without being hit or knocked off, but failed to land the final jump.[3]

Coen and Lambert greeted Triss upon her arrival at Kaer Morhen to train Ciri. The following day, the duo heckled Ciri, who entered the dining hall wearing a bright-colored shirt with a flower in her hair to match Triss. Ciri became upset and fled, which warranted a scolding from Triss.[4]

Coen asked Triss how Vesemir was doing after he and Triss were attached in the lab. He was fine, but shaken, Triss admitted. But Lambert couldn't help but wonder what a mage needed with a witcher. Triss insisted that he was not one of her kind. Fire magic was off-limits for them. Whoever he was, he wasn't working for the Brotherhood.[5]

Hunting Ciri[]

Coen and Lambert were on the hunt after getting word from Vesemir that Ciri was possessed by Voleth Meir and that while under her control, she murdered several of their brothers as they slept. Fueled by their rage, they hunted Ciri down to the dining hall, where she unleashed a scream so powerful that it cracked the medallion tree, unveiling the monolith hidden within. A second scream then shattered the monolith and opened a portal to release two basilisks. While the witchers eventually managed to kill the beasts, they lost two more brothers in the process. Yennefer then slit her wrists and summoned Voleth Meir into her body, allowing for Ciri to regain control and portal the Deathless Mother back to her home sphere.[6]
