Enchanting: Quality Has Its Price is a secondary quest in the Hearts of Stone expansion.

Completing this quest unlocks enchanting.

Walkthrough[]

After giving the initial 5,000 Oren3, the Runewright will then ask for you to acquire some jade for him, as it's needed for part of his craft. With that, go pick up the pickaxe in the nearby barn and head to the locations far east, north of Novigrad.

While 3 locations are marked, only one has enough jade and naturally is the only location with enemies, Bloodrot Pit (the middle location). Inside, you'll likely have to fight off several groups of arachnomorphs before you can then examine the the center of the first area of the cave, near the base of the pillar, to find and mine the jade.

Note: Just inside the cave entrance, you can also start The Drakenborg Redemption by looting a corpse.

Once extracted, head back to talk to the runewright and you'll see he's set up a basic workstation and thanks you for the jade, completing the quest (100XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level). He can then make level 1 enchantments, and is also available as an amateur craftsman for any kind of gear.

Note that, while the quest completes without further payments, to unlock all 3 craft levels you'll need to pay him substantially more:

  • 10,000 Oren3 unlocking level 2 enchantments and journeyman craftsman
  • 15,000 Oren3 unlocking the final level 3 enchantments and master craftsman

These payments also earn 100XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level each, thus actually tripling the standard reward for the quest. Note: these are quest rewards, not the regular XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level earned per 10 Oren3 paid, and are subject to the XP character/quest level and difficulty constraints.

Journal entry[]

The Ofieri runewright got down to work, but announced at once that more advanced runes or glyphs would require special materials. Jade, it seems, is a necessary part of advanced runewrighting. Since Geralt was interested in enchanted goods of the better sort, he decided to look around for a hunk of this element.
Finding large quantities of jade was not easy, but when the witcher set his mind to it, he could even find a dove in a blizzard. Soon enough the Ofieri runewright had what he desired.

Objectives[]

  • Find a pickaxe.
  • Acquire a hunk of jade for the Ofieri runewright.
  • Take the hunk of jade to the Ofieri runewright. (100XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level)

Notes[]

  • It is possible to rush for this quest in order to gain early access to the Runewright's services. The arachnomorphs spawn locations vary and can be force-altered by meditating outside the cave. Eventually only a single one will be at the entrance, with the rest walking around the passage to the second part of the cave. The tight corridor makes the lone one far easier to corner and kill despite its high level, especially in a New Game +. Once it is dead, wait for an opportune moment to sneak toward the objective without attracting more arachnomorphs (throwing a Northern Wind to freeze them for a bit is very useful). Once you start mining, it is inevitable that some will spot you, but Geralt is invulnerable while extracting the jade and you "only" have to run away afterwards. While running, you have to not get not get stuck on the "step" at the mouth of the exit tunnel - rolling up in its left corner appears to be the easiest solution. This is not easy to pull off, and it takes multiple attempts, but it is achievable.
    • It is even possible that not a single arachnomorph spawns in the entry tunnel, but that is much rarer and in this case it is more likely that more will be near the jade deposit.
  • The second level of enchanting was originally meant to be unlocked through an additional quest, titled "Enchanting: Mastery Demands Sacrifice", which however was cut from the game, along with a painite crystal (page has more info) that was to be delivered to the runewright. A video can be seen below, and the quest can be enabled via the following console command: addfact(mq6005_painite_enabled) (at any time before paying the 10,000 Oren3)

Bugs[]

  • Prior to Patch 1.12, the pickaxe could often not be picked up, making the quest impossible to complete. As a work-around it can be added via a console command: additem(mq6005_pickaxe)
