Exploding bolt is an ammunition item in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and comes in 2 different forms:
Note that these bolts show damage as "fire."
Exploding bolt (magic)[]
This craftable version can be purchased from the following merchants:
- Blacksmith in Arinbjorn
- Blacksmith in Oxenfurt
- Zoltan Chivay during The Battle of Kaer Morhen, if he is recruited
- Smith during the "Witcher" epilogue, if Redania wins the war
A stack of 10-20 can be found in a chest at the Scoia'tael camp during the Spooked Mare quest. Stacks of up to 10 have a 50% chance to appear on some soldier corpses (all may also have tracking bolts):
- South of Lindenvale's cemetery, under the northern side of the bridge
- In the middle of some rocks on the fields between the two converging roads southeast of Benek
- In Ignis Fatuus' cave, right next to the chest with Diagram: Ursine silver sword - superior
- Under a tall flag in the marsh northeast of the Seven Cats Inn
- In the woods far north of Est Tayiar, edge of the base game map, but shortly west of Vikk Watchtower with the Hearts of Stone expansion
- In the ruins right in the middle between Holmstein's Port and the Cave of Dreams
Bugs[]
- The crafting screen will show these to have level 19 required and 0.01 , but any crafted exploding bolts will have a level requirement of 13 and 0.11 . While not erroneous per se, "+12 Fire damage" will also be shown as an effect instead of the inherent base damage on the bolts, which actually ends up as "11-13 Fire damage".
Exploding bolt (relic)[]
Starting at level 25, the Relic version can be purchased from the following merchants:
A stack of 20 can be found in Arnvald's locked chest in the servants' room at Kaer Trolde citadel, which however is only lootable if he dies during King's Gambit. Small stacks of 3-6 may be found in a few containers in the Blood and Wine expansion.
