Geoffrey Monck was a powerful mage and member of the Novigradian Union along with Jan Bekker and Giambattista. He was also a founding member of the Chapter of the Gift and the Art, and one of the first Nordlings to master the magic of the Elder Races.[1]
He was the author of The Magic of the Elder Folk, The Theory and Practice of Using Teleportals, and co-author of Natural Magic with Ivo Richert.[2]
Monck became famous because of his habit of trapping djinns in bottles and extracting three wishes out of each genie so ensnared. Apparently, he was able to conjure whirlwinds and hurricanes, as well as levitate with the help of his prisoners. He sealed each bottle with a sign depicting "a broken cross and a nine-pointed star".[3]
Biography[]
Novigradian Union[]
In the late 8th century, after the first landing of humans, Monck, Bekker and Giambattista signed a pact of non-aggression known as the Novigradian Union with the local rulers, priests and druids to ensure mages did not end up on the throne.[1]
Expedition to Loc Muinne[]
Several years later, he set off up the Pontar, known then as the River of Alabaster Bridges, sailing all the way to Loc Muinne. He persuaded the elves there to adopt a group of Source children, including the young Gerhart of Aelle, to be taught by elven sorcerers.[1]
Formation of the Chapter[]
In the late half of the 9th century, the first Chapter was installed and their magical laws enacted by Monck, Ivo Richert, Herbert Stammelford, Aurora Henson, Agnes of Glanville, and Radmir of Tor Carnedd. Many mages did not conform to their laws, and so a bloody war broke out, Raffard the White being a casualty.[1]
