The Giancardi Bank is a financial institution with its main branch in Gors Velen, owned and operated by the dwarf Molnar of the Giancardi family, though other family-owned branches exist in Kerack, Novigrad, and Tretogor. The majority of staff are subservient dwarves, though not all, and they are recognized by their identical uniforms.[1][2]

History[]

Association with Mages[]

Having existed since before the reign of King Dezmod, the bank's main headquarters were located in the city of Gors Velen, near the isle of Thanedd, home to both the Brotherhood of Sorcerers and the school of Aretuza. Due to its proximity to these institutions, the Giancardi Bank—especially its Gors Velen branch—maintained a close relationship with the mages. Through its main branch, many costly magical experiments were funded, along with the magic schools of Aretuza and Ban Ard Academy. Meanwhile, the Novigrad branch primarily focused on increasing the Chapter's profits by investing in the Exchange.[3]

Tax Fluctuations[]

In 1266 and early 1267, poll and winter billeting taxes levied by the military authorities were doubled. On top of that, every merchant or entrepreneur had to pay their "tenth groat" into the royal treasury. Non-humans also faced an increase in the poll and chimney tax and were additionally charged a compulsory donation of ten per hundred groats if they engaged in trade or manufacturing. Adding all that up, Molnar ended up paying sixty percent of his income into the treasury, and all the bank's branches spread over the Four Kingdoms contributed six hundred marks a year.[1]

Later Transactions[]

In June 1267, Molnar, at Yennefer of Vengerberg's request, made a 1,500 oren donation to the Temple of Melitele in Ellander, an anonymous 2,000 Novigradian crown payment to the school of Aretuza for Ciri's tuition, and asked for three hundred crowns in cash. Instead, Molnar provided a banker's draft for five hundred. He also offered to cancel a debt worth 100 crowns incurred by Geralt in Dorian, but Yennefer objected and instead proposed that he raise the payment for Geralt's contract in Hirundum.[1]
