Henri III, also known as Henri Gras ("Henri the Fat"), was a duke of Toussaint, ruling at an unknown point in history and of uncertain relation to the later ducal house.

Biography[]

Henri admired distant lands to the south of his realm and considered them more civilized. Based on their model, he issued a decree reforming Bastoy to a prison with diminished guard. The decree forbade physical punishments and dark cells, limited flogging, allowed prisoners to possess private property and walk around the prison grounds. Furthermore, prisoners were to be fed properly and taught how to read and write.

Henri believed that this would lower the crime rate by showing criminals a better way. This "experiment", however, turned out to be inapplicable in lands surrounding Sansretour and Blessure rivers. As a result, Bastoy became a ruin and eventually, a another main prison had to be established.

His name is borne by a small quare in the eastern part of Hauteville district, Beauclair.[1]
