Hereward was the duke/prince of Ellander and a member of King Foltest of Temeria's Royal Council. He was married to Ermellia and known for his connivance towards the Order of the White Rose, especially Arthur Tailles.[1]

Biography[]

In 1252, after investing a large sum of money into the Order, which led to him receiving several of the knights into his service, he sent Falwick and Tailles to arrest Geralt of Rivia at the nearby Temple of Melitele. He wished the witcher out of the duchy as he didn't want a man with such a reputation living in his city.[1]

Northern Wars[]

In July 1267, after receiving an envoy from Emperor Emhyr var Emreis, Foltest held a council meeting to discuss Nilfgaard's advances in the Second Northern War, including details of the fall of Aedirn, and Verden's new sworn loyalty to Emhyr. Duke Bronibor believed hanging the envoy and a full frontal assault on the Imperials at Aedirn, with support from Kaedwen and Redania would force them back beyond the Marnadal Stairs, though Archpriest Willemer disagreed with his threats against the envoy, and Hereward also believed they should hear him out. Afterwards, Foltest announced to them he had accepted the envoys proposition of peace.[2]

It is unknown whether he had any children, but by 1272, he was already succeeded by his relative Herevard II, the rightful heir.[3]

Notes[]

Trivia[]

  • The name "Hereward" is derived from the Old English elements here "army" and weard "guard". This was the name of an 11th-century Anglo-Saxon leader who rebelled against Norman rule.[4]
  • His character is probably based on prince Konrad I who brought crusaders into Poland.
