Jan Bekker was a mage and likely the very first Nordling to master the magic of the Elder Races. He subjected the Force to his will, thus granting the north a powerful weapon in their many fights to come.
He was a member of the Novigradian Union, along with Geoffrey Monck and Giambattista, and an original member of the Brotherhood of Sorcerers.[1] He was also the author of The Invisible World.[2]
Biography[]
First Landing[]
In the 760s, Jan Bekker and several others first landed on the Continent, after several months of vomiting bile off the side of their "Ship of Outcasts". After the landing which, against all odds, was successful, he was able to overcome the Power. They found an area to settle, where Bekker forced water to gush from a nearby rock. Surrounded by settlers, he drove away the clouds and held back tempest to save the harvest.[1]
Identification of the sources[]
After the settlements were formed, Bekker and his friend Giambattista put the children of the settlers through a magical test as they arrived, in order to reveal Sources. The selected children were taken from their parents and brought to Mirthe, the first seat of the mages. They were trained in the ways of magic, one the children being Agnes of Glanville, the first woman to be an enchantress.[1]
Novigradian Union[]
In Novigrad, Bekker, Giambattista and Geoffrey Monck concluded a non-aggression pact with the rulers, priests and druids, known as the Novigradian Union.[1]
