Kaveri was an Aedirnian woman who lived in the city of Vengerberg with her family. She was the mother of Yennefer.

Biography

Kaveri was a human woman who had a relationship with a half-elf man. Together they had a daughter, Yennefer,[1] whom she gave birth to in the Aedirnian capital city of Vengerberg in 1192.[2] The girl was born with a twisted spine and partial paralysis of the face, but also had the ability to use magic. Yennefer's father was killed during the Great Cleansing, in which thousands of elves died, and Kaveri eventually entered a relationship with a man named Fletcher. Together the two had four more children: three daughters and one son.

Kaveri lived in Vengerberg with her family, where they raised pigs.[1] In 1206,[2] an incident where Yennefer accidentally teleported herself to the Tower of the Gull to escape danger brought her daughter's abilities to the attention of the sorceress Tissaia de Vries, the Rectoress of Aretuza, a magic academy for young women[1] that was located in Temeria on Thanedd Island.[2] Shortly after, Tissaia traveled to Vengerberg by horse and cart, and Kaveri noticed her approach through a window in the family's home. The sorceress found Yennefer and her step-father Fletcher in the pigpens outside the house and asked him how much it would cost to purchase the girl. While they haggled on a price, Kaveri came outside and asked what they were doing. When she realized that Fletcher meant to sell their daughter, she insisted that he couldn't go through with it and implored that he consider what the "witch" would do to her. Fletcher dismissed her pleas and disavowed any relation to Yennefer, who was not his biological child. Although Yennefer begged her mother to help her and refused to go with Tissaia, Kaveri acquiesced without any further protest. She watched as her daughter was taken away and held her other four children while weeping.[1]

Notes

  • Although Kaveri's name was not spoken out loud in the episode Four Marks, her name was given in the credits.[1]
  • Yennefer's mother previously appeared, albeit unnamed, during a brief flashback in the novel The Tower of the Swallow. There are multiple key differences between the original account of Yennefer's mother written by Andrzej Sapkowski and that given in the Netflix series:
    • Yennefer's mother had elven blood, not her father.
    • The father who raised Yennefer in her earliest years was her biological father, although he did insinuate that she may have been sired by another man, a suggestion that offended her mother.
