The Lassommoir is a quarter for the working class within the Hauteville district of Beauclair, right behind the walls near Temple Gate. Poor townsfolk inhabiting this area are either engaged in the nearby Temple Cemetery, helping in the Port District as dockhands or as builders on the estates of the wealthiest Toussaintois.

Aside from the large temple of Lebioda and two cemeteries there is also a tavern with a fox on its sign, The Clever Clogs, belonging to Hugo Monnart and his two brothers.

Trivia[]

  • L'Assommoir is a novel by Émile Zola about alcoholism and poverty in the working-class districts of Paris. Assommoir is a French term referring to a cheap drinking establishment for the working-class (from the verb assommer "to knock out/stun"; it was a popular colloquialism in 19th century Paris, when the novel was released). It is also French for murder hole (in fortifications).
