Lower Sodden was the northern part of the former kingdom of Sodden, the area around the Yaruga river between Cintra, Brugge, and Riverdell. In the aftermath of the Northern War I, Sodden was divided between Nilfgaard and the Northern Kingdoms into Upper Sodden (the southern region) and Lower Sodden.
After the death of Ekkehard of Sodden, King Foltest of Temeria became the ruler of Lower Sodden because, as Ekkehard's nephew, he was the logical heir. It was later reunited with Upper Sodden and became Sodden once more, though this time as a vassal state to Temeria rather than a kingdom.
History[]
Northern War I[]
In 1263, the Nilfgaardian Empire began a full scale invasion of the north, beginning with the Battle of Marnadal, in which the Nilfgaardian Army, led by Menno Coehoorn, were victorious, marching north to Cintra. After sacking the city, the army marched further north into Upper Sodden and defeated a northern army, taking control of the Yaruga river, of which they crossed into Lower Sodden.[1]
Upon marching into Lower Sodden, the Nilfgaardian Army were confronted by the armies of Redania, Temeria, Aedirn, and Kaedwen, united under the leadership of Vizimir II, king of Redania, as well as the sorcerers of the Northern Kingdoms. The famous Battle of Sodden Hill commenced, comprised of over 100,000 soldiers fighting, with the Nilfgaardian Army swiftly being pushed back across the Yaruga.[2]
