Ocvist (Dwarvish for Staring Eye) was a legendary albino red dragon from the Quartz Mountain, reportedly bested by Yarpen Zigrin and his band of six dwarves. Even more legendary, however, was his hoard of treasure.[4]
Biography[]
Ocvist was ancient, even by dragon standards—tales suggest he had been alive for at least a million years.[3] Over his inconceivable lifespan, he amassed an enormous hoard of treasure, including sapphires of previously unknown colors and diamonds the size of cherries,[4] which he stored in ruins deep beneath the earth.[3] He earned the moniker "The Destroyer" and was known for slaying someone named Trajan.[2]
The dragon was ultimately said to have been defeated by a group of dwarves led by Yarpen Zigrin.[4]
Personality[]
In his youth, Ocvist was mockingly called "Munchkin" by his peers, a name that left a lasting mark on him. Due to this childhood trauma, he avoided associating with beings slightly smaller than him, let alone those taller. His poor hearing made him particularly sensitive to words like "small" or any diminutives, as he often feared they referred to him.[3]
Despite his formidable reputation, Ocvist was a kind-hearted creature who enjoyed intelligent debates, even if his mind was no longer as sharp as in his younger days. His dementia and lack of social interaction led him to see enlightened sages in the goblins who visited him every fifty years. In his cave, he raised a herd of mice, with whom he conversed when no more interesting interlocutors were available. The most engaging debaters often found themselves rewarded with parts of his treasure.[3]
On sunny days, Ocvist loved basking in the heat, often napping for entire days, waking only to snack. He also enjoyed long walks, candlelight dinners,[2] and spending nights in his underground cave, where he would tell the mice tales from his vibrant youth.[3]
Notes[]
- Ocvist is mentioned in the short story "The Bounds of Reason" in the Sword of Destiny collection by Andrzej Sapkowski.
- According to Dandelion, there exists a ballad that tells the tale of the brave Yarpen defeating Ocvist. The bard, however, considers this ballad to be poorly executed and dull, as it is not one of his own.
- In Oko Yrrhedesa, it is suggested that Ocvist's dementia was so severe that players could convince him that they were the rightful owners of his treasure hoard, and he would happily give it to them—suggesting that Yarpen's band may not have actually "slain" the elderly dragon but rather "fooled" him.
