Open Sesame: The Safecracker is a main quest in the Hearts of Stone expansion and a subquest to Open Sesame!

It is started when you agree to participate in the heist and covers the task of finding a safecracker accomplice.

Walkthrough[]

You have two possible accomplices in Casimir Bassi and Quinto. Who you hire will change the enemies you face during the heist, and they further pick opposing sides at its end.

Similarly to the break-in artist choice, you can earn a little extra XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level if you go for one first and then recruit the other, but only minor rewards through payments and Axii. If you additionally want to have no failed objectives, it's best to start with Quinto.

Recruiting Quinto[]

Quinto is not far from the Herbalist's Hut, so it is convenient to find him straight away. You may encounter a few bandits on the way if you try to beeline for the spot, but they're entirely avoidable and not part of the quest. When you arrive at the place, he will be in the hands of Hans of Cidaris, who you might've already met during Contract: The Creature from Oxenfurt Forest and you have to convince him to free Quinto.

Note: You have to talk to Quinto in his cage. Interacting directly with Hans will only present dialogue options for the contract and not this quest.

Hans will ask you to pay 200 Oren3 (20XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) to release Quinto. However, if you completed his contract and demanded more money at its end, he will be less than happy to see you and demand 400 Oren3 (40XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) instead. You can haggle with him to lower the price, and it works the same like with contracts only this time you will be trying for a lower price instead of higher. You can also play Gwent or insult and then fight him, and if you win he frees Quinto for free, but if you lose in either the price is doubled, potentially further to 800 Oren3 (80XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) with the contract completed.

Regardless how you do it, once Quinto is freed he will be at your disposal. You can recruit him right away and end the quest (150XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) or tell him that you don't need him yet. If you choose the latter, he'll wait for you near the Oxenfurt gate at midnight and you can go recruit Casimir instead.

Recruiting Casimir[]

Go to Alness to find Casimir on top of his house, threatening to blow himself up because his wife was cheating on him. You will have a few options to pick from:

  • First one will just make him kill himself
  • Second one leads to options to either sympathize, try to recruit him, or mock him. Sympathizing like the previous option will make him kill himself. As long as you go with either mocking or recruiting, and don't try to tell him he'll find someone else, it'll lead to a fistfight here.
  • Third option, to straight up mock him, will lead into a fistfight as well
  • Fourth option is to just use Axii (requires Delusion Level 2 for a minimum of 35XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level)

If you got into a fight with him, he'll be hitting you with his burning torch, but you'll have potions and signs available. It doesn't matter if you win or lose as he'll agree to join you in the end, just like if you used Axii. However, regardless of how you get him to agree, you can't tell him to wait or refuse to tell him the details of the heist or he'll proceed to blow himself up. Hiring him on the spot is the only option to keep him alive (150XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level), otherwise you'll be left with Quinto as your only choice.

Journal entry[]

Vaults are, as a rule, difficult to enter. Their metal-plated doors must either be teased open in silence by a skilled safecracker – or blown to smithereens by a demolitions expert. The unequalled master of the first method was Quinto, the best safecracker north of the Yaruga. The go-to specialist for the second was Casimir Bassi, a dwarf hailing from Mahakam.
If Geralt recruits Quinto:
Geralt decided on Quinto. Hans of Cidaris was holding the man captive, so Geralt first had to free him... though once he did, he had the impression the famed safecracker could have waltzed out of his prison at any time without his help. The ease with which Quinto opened his cell's lock boded well for his chances of cracking open the door to the Borsodis' vault.
If Geralt recruits Casimir:
Geralt chose to recruit Casimir to join his crew. Expecting to have to persuade the dwarf to abandon his idyllic family life, Geralt found himself instead convincing the dwarf to cling to any life at all. Abandoned by his wife, Casimir was set on exploding himself and his wrecked home in a spectacularly effective suicide – until he heard the witcher's offer.

Objectives[]

  • Convince Casimir to take part in the robbery.
  • If you taunted Casimir into a fight:
    • Defeat Casimir.
  • Go to the mercenaries' camp and talk to Quinto.
  • If you tell Hans you'll be back:
    • Convince Hans to free Quinto.
  • If you taunt Hans into a fight:
    • Defeat Hans in a fistfight.
  • If you postpone telling Quinto about the job:
    • Meet with Quinto at the Academy gate at midnight to recruit him.

Trivia[]

  • The name "Quinto" is possibly a reference to a safecracker Henryk Kwinto from the Polish film "Vabank".
