The energy used by magic users is commonly referred to as Power or the Force. While many perceive it to be synonymous with Chaos, erudite wizards consider it to be much more than that. Priests, in turn, believe that their abilities have been granted to them by gods, and tend to distance themselves from mages.

Most mages draw Power that derives from the Elemental Planes of Air, Fire, Earth, and Water.[1] Elemental magic flows through material world via ley lines,[2] and is the strongest and most accessible in places where these magical veins meet, known as Intersections.[1]

Some people are born with innate resistancy or sensivity to the Force. Some of the women afflicted by the Black Sun, such as Maxii van Dekkar or Renfri Vellga, were known to be immune to several magical spells.[3][4][5] Those with natural affinity for magical force on the other hand, known as the Sources, can wield extreme amounts of Power, but are rarely able to master it and tend to go mad if their talent is undiscovered by a trained magical user who could teach them to harness their abilities.[1][6]

Notes[]

  • According to Mousesack, a virgin can't use the Force, which is how he suspected Pavetta was pregnant. However, this is just a myth and virgins can use it as well.[3]
