Rience was a mage who had been sentenced to 10 years in prison by Queen Calanthe of Cintra for crossing her.
Biography[]
Freed from Prison[]
Rience was serving time in a Cintran prison when the fall of Cintra and Queen Calanthe's suicide occured. Despite this, Rience's sentence was kept in place as the country was taken over by elves and Nilfgaard. During this time, he was visited by Lydia van Bredevoort with a proposal from an outside party interested in finding and capturing Ciri. He agreed and soon set out to find the lost princess.
He then proceeded to kidnap and torture the bard Jaskier for information about Geralt and Ciri's whereabouts. He uses fire magic to torture Jaskier until Yennefer arrives and rescues him. During the rescue, Rience threatens Yennefer with fire magic by holding up a finger emitting a small flame, but she spits alcohol at him, catching the flame and burning his face.[1]
Tracking Ciri to the Temple of Melitele[]
Continuing his mission to find Ciri, Rience portaled into the laboratory in Kaer Morhen, and attacked Vesemir and Triss Merigold. Rience attacked the pair with fire magic, wounding Vesemir. He stole the new witcher mutagen containing Ciri's blood that Triss had created, and then escaped through another portal. He later met with Lydia to deliver the mutagen, and asked to meet her employer. Lydia gave him a crew to retrieve Ciri from the Temple.
Yennefer later warned Geralt about Rience, referring to him as the "fire fucker". Rience and the Mitchell Brothers then appeared at the temple and attempted to capture Ciri. After Geralt intervened, Rience chased Ciri and Yennefer, using fire magic to try and melt his way into the room they were holed up in. However, after Geralt killed the brothers, he attempted to kill Rience, who managed to escape through a portal.[2]
Rience reported back to Lydia regarding her latest failure. Even worse, he still hadn't met her employer, though Lydia only promised he'd meet him if Rience brought the girl. Hoping to push the process along, Rience agreed to allow Lydia to run tests on the vial of witcher mutagen containing Ciri's blood in hopes of convincing her employer to come. Lydia performed a blood tracing ritual, but doing so with the witcher mutagen left her horribly disfigured and scarred.[3]
Rience and Lydia met with her employer to discuss their plans to find Ciri moving forward.[4]
Give up the job[]
Rience continued his work of finding and bringing Ciri to her employer, hiring mercenaries to track her and the witcher. Later, Rience decided to buy a jackapace from Veldhoek, using the girl's blood contained in the mutagen, he sent the beast to track down Ciri in Belleteyn. Rience later received information from Veldhoek that Ciri would be transported in a convoy to Aedirn, not realizing that this was only to lure him into a trap.
With thugs, they ambushed Ciri in Shaerrawedd, where Rience tried to take her through a portal, but was forced to escape, Geralt followed him into a castle fighting and the witcher broke both of his hands. Although a mage managed to manage it and use his fire magic again.
Later, Rience has an argument with Lydia, after learning that his employer works for Nilfgaard so he decided not to do the job anymore.
Death[]
When they were leaving Aretuza, Rience attacked Ciri and Yennefer, Rience proceeded to imprison Ciri in a circle of fire and threatened to kill her if Yennefer tried anything, Yennefer just drew Geralt's sword, proceeded to throw it at Rience who dodged it, but Geralt was behind him, he grabbed the sword and decapitated Rience with a single cut, ending his life.
