Biography[]
Ascension at Aretuza[]
Around 1206,[1] Sabrina had a conduit moment — a burst of uncontrolled magic — which got her noticed by Aretuza's rectoress, Tissaia de Vries. Sabrina was then brought to the magical academy to learn how to control and wield magic.
Alongside other new students, like Yennefer and Fringilla, Sabrina attended her first class, where Tissaia explained the dangers of magic and that they were all "conduits of chaos" as magic itself was a way to control chaos. She then presented a magical task to the students where a lesson is quickly learned after Fringilla's hand rapidly ages and shrivels up: there is a give and take with magic. After the girl's hand returns to normal, Tissaia then reveals to the class how to use the essence from something else (in this case a flower) to safely raise the small stone before them. After showing the correct way, the rectoress has the students try again, and Sabrina is able to do it successfully alongside the other girls except for Yennefer.
Weeks if not months pass of continued training and classes until one stormy night, Tissaia brings Sabrina and the rest of the girls in her group to Tor Lara to test their ability to control the ultimate expression of chaos: capture lightning in a bottle. The first three students fail, including Yennefer. With Yennefer still recovering on the ground after being struck by lightning, Tissaia calls for Sabrina to attempt it. Sabrina goes to stand in the center and raises her bottle and manages to successfully capture lighting in it, making her the first in the group to succeed. As Tissaia congratulates Sabrina, remarking that she's "the strong amongst the weak", the rectoress gives a glance over at Yennefer. Enraged at this and her own failures, Yennefer screams out and shoots lightning at Tissaia, who redirects it into the sky.[2]
By 1210, Sabrina completed her schooling and is assigned by the Chapter to serve as a mage advisor in Kaedwen's court. After she goes through her enchanted transformation, she attends the Aretuza ball and introduced to Kaedwen's king to cement her new position. In the middle of the dance, Sabrina witnessed with bewilderment Yennefer's transformation when she entered the lounge.[3]
Conclave of northern mages[]
Many years later, in 1263, Sabrina was one of the many mages who attended the conclave of Northern mages in Aretuza, which was headed by Artorius, Stregobor, and Tissaia. While the first two made it clear they had no desire to go to war with Nilfgaard, and especially not for Cintra who had rejected their mages for decades, Tissaia insisted they should help Cintra and fight Nilfgaard as Nilfgaard was a threat to their way of life and magical practices. Sabrina, Vilgefortz, and Vanielle side with Tissaia but as all the mages began to argue, their meeting is interrupted by none other than Fringilla. While Tissaia and a few others trade remarks about Nilfgaard and Fringilla having undone so much work, Fringilla declares she's only there to issue a warning: if the mages there won't pick sides, then they should at least stay out of Nilfgaard's way as they only wish to take Cintra. The conclave then calls a vote, resulting in the majority of the mages in favor of letting Cintra fall.[4]
Battle of Sodden Hill[]
Not satisfied with this response from the Chapter, Sabrina teams up with other mages who also wish to try and stop Nilfgaard and she, along with approximately 60 other mages, including Yennefer, Tissaia, Vilgefortz, Vanielle, Coral, and Triss, travel via a ship headed for Sodden Hill, where they must get to the elven keep that sits atop it before Nilfgaard arrives. Having already sent word to the Northern kingdoms, Temeria and Kaedwen have agreed to join them in defending the land but will take some time for their armies to arrive. As such, the mages plan to protect the keep and hold out for the armies to reinforce them as it's the last spot between the North and Nilfgaard. When Sabrina and the rest arrive at the keep, they are greeted by a man who represents the displaced war refugees that have holed up in the keep. As Yennefer advises him to take the children and hide, he notes there's no more hiding from Nilfgaard, their only chance is to fight.
The keep was attacked by Fringilla and Nilfgaard in the late hours of the night. The sun had risen and the Northern mages made it through the night. Unfortunately, Nilfgaard arrived much sooner than they anticipated and the Northern armies were still a ways out. There were only 22 of them left, Sabrina, Triss, Yennefer, Tissaia, Vilgefortz, Vanielle, Coral, and Atlan Kerk included. They witnessed as a thick fog consumed the mountains around them, signaling Nilfgaard's encroachment. Tissaia ordered Sabrina to take the villagers to the artillery room while she and Triss head down.
Sabrina led the archers from within the castle. The villagers packed blue meteorite into bottles and launched them into the sky. Sabrina and the others shot the bottles with arrows, causing massive explosions, taking out the Nilfgaard army below.
At some point during the battle, Sabrina had been taken over by a kind of silver worm-like parasite that slithered into her ear, as well as the ears of two villager boys. She handed them two bottles of explosive blue meteorites. Sabrina sneaked up behind Yennefer and stabbed her in the abdomen with an arrow. The two young boys, also under the control of the parasites, took their bottles of blue meteorite and dropped them on the tables filled with blue meteorite, causing a massive explosion on both ends of the keep that sent Yennefer and Sabrina flying off the tower, though the former managed to stick the landing. The fall appeared to return Sabrina to her normal self as she apologized for attacking Yennefer.[5]
After the Battle[]
After Yennefer and King Foltest's forces defeat the Nilfgaardian Army at Sodden Hill, the mages take the survivors back to Aretuza. When it's later revealed Yennefer actually survived and has returned to Aretuza, Sabrina, Triss, and Murta joined Yennefer at an underwater pool just as they catch Yennefer trying to magically heat up the water but to no avail. After the sorceresses express their happiness that Yennefer survived they exchange some friendly banter while Sabrina heats the water and asks the others if they would go swimming with her. While the rest do so, Triss refuses as her scars from the battle have left her self-conscious.
Sabrina was later present at a memorial ceremony where the Nilfgaardian, Cahir, was meant to be executed by Yennefer. However, Yennefer at the last minute freed Cahir and the two escaped from the scene.
Thanedd coup[]
Sabrina, along with other Brotherhood sorcerers, attempted to resolve the differences between the Northern states. In Sabrina's case, she did so by negotiating with King Henselt for the supply of grain to Temeria.
Later, she and Margarita ran into Ciri in Gors Velen's market, where Rita mistook her for a fugitive student, when Yennefer appeared and explained the mishap. To apologize for the trouble, Yennefer invited the sorceresses to The Silver Heron. While bathing, Yennefer and Sabrina joke about the world of men in particular, with Sabrina finding it hard to believe that Yennefer likes a witcher.
She later attends Aretuza's ball, where she gossips with her friend Marti Södergren, and turns her attention to the witcher Geralt of Rivia when he enters the party. At this, Sabrina makes clear advances on him right in front of Yennefer as she enjoys irritating the black-haired sorceress, but Geralt isn't fooled by Sabrina's antics.
When the fighting breaks out, Sabrina sides with Redania and joins forces with the North to helps apprehend suspected traitors, who were in favor of Nilfgaard. Despite having sided with Redania, Sabrina joined the others and participated directly in the battle of Aretuza and is one of the few who managed to survive. Later, she accompanied Yennefer, Tissaia, Triss, Keira, and Margarita to Vuilpanne Castle , where they find the bodies of the novices who were missing. Together they break Vilgefortz's spell and bring the bodies back to Aretuza to give them an honorable burial. With the fall of Aretuza and Tissaia's death, Sabrina joined the other sorceresses to face the threat that now looms over the continent.
