Sorel Albert Amador Degerlund, more simply known as Sorel Degerlund, was a talented young mage from Rissberg. He was the ambitious assistant of Ortolan, as well as one of the most respected of the guild. His long hair and effeminate beauty allowed him to not only further his own agenda amongst men and women alike, but also helped him in gaining the favor of the Chapter. Despite the impression many had of him being a talented magician, Sorel sacrificed much for the sake of his career.

Due to Sorel's fascination with experiments that were often banned by the guild, he usually kept the extent of his own participation secret. After a series of murders on coal-men and farmers in the surrounding area of Rissberg, the mages Algernon Guincamp and Harlan Tzara hired the witcher Geralt of Rivia to investigate the strange case. They believed that Sorel had used Goetia to summon up a demon, which later escaped and started killing everyone it met.

One day the witcher, when he was patrolling the terrains where the massacres had occurred, found the mage Sorel senseless; covered in the blood and guts of the dozens of bodies that lay around him. Upon waking, the mage despaired over the events that had taken place. With the understanding that the demon had taken control of Sorel and killed everyone around him, the witcher decided to spare Sorel's life and told him to teleport to Rissberg where they would process him fairly for what had taken place.

Instead of teleporting himself and Geralt to Rissberg, Sorel teleported them both to his hideout where he poisoned the witcher with a syringe. While Geralt remained paralyzed by the powerful poison, Sorel admitted that the story of the demon had been a lie. The ones actually responsible for the terrible murders were, in fact, two ogre-troll hybrids he created through magical means by the names of Bue and Bang, as well as Pastor; a skilled crossbowman.

Sorel's plan to kill the witcher, however, failed: the witcher mutations had neutralized the toxins and Geralt was able to free himself. After Sorel had teleported him away from his hideout, he was sentenced to house arrest in the Citadel (in reality, this was simply a ruse to make it look like the Rissberg mages had taken care of him). Geralt eventually found a way into the Citadel and killed Sorel for his actions.
