In order to use magic one has to use Power. Several possible sources are listed below.
Person as a source[]
- The simplest supernatural abilities, some of which not even considered magic, are based only on the intellect of the user. Persons who utilise the power of
mind are referred to as psionics.
- Some individuals are born with potential to draw Power instinctively. They are called Sources and are conduits of magical energy. Some mages use them as mobile canisters of energy but by the 13th century it had started to be considered immoral.
- Unicorns and individuals with Elder Blood have innate Power of their own that allows them to jump across spacetime.
Element as a source[]
There are four Primary Elements (and unknown number of Para-Elements) sourced in elemental planes. Manifesting themselves in the world through ley lines and their intersections (and places of Power built atop them) they are the basic sources of Power. While most of the spells work best while usint one specific Element, casting them utilising another is still possible though harder.
Quintessence or Mixed Elements[]
The most complicated spells base on Ether, or Spirit. Mages who want to cast them must either draw to its plane, called Ether, or mix the Primary Elements.
Black Magic[]
Though banned by the Brotherhood of Sorcerers the forbidden arts still lure practitioners due to the possibilities they offer.
