imho "Halflings" are called this way only because of their body height. Well, they are smaller than other races. And Tolkien called them the same (just another word for "Hobbit").
As for the mix of two races Sapkowski prefers using the word "Hybrids" (especially in his actual witcher novel "Sezon Burz").
