Till Death Do You Part is a secondary quest in the Blood and Wine expansion.

Contract: Quarrelling at the Cemetery
Since no one from our residents' committee seems to think it is their responsibility, I'll write it myself: this cannot go on! That infernal racket coming from the cemetery is driving us mad and no one is doing anything about it! I know we all hear it - Madame Bouquet admitted it keeps her awake all night long, and she lives further away from the cemetery than any of us.
If there is a witcher who can put an end to all the screaming, brawling and insults, I'll pay him from my own pouch.
Ask them to point out Charles Lanzano at the Clever Clogs. That'll be me.

Walkthrough[]

The quest may be started by finding its notice on The Gran'place's notice board, speaking directly to Charles Lanzano at The Clever Clogs Tavern, or hearing noises at the Temple Cemetery at night.

If Lanzano is talked to before going to the cemetery, he will explain that noises from the cemetery prevent him from sleeping and he can be haggled with, but it's a very cheap contract and only a couple extra crowns can be negotiated.

At the cemetery, different things will happen depending on the time. During daylight, you will have a search area and multiple clues to examine, but Geralt will eventually conclude that none of them lead to the culprit and he has to wait until dark. If you arrived at night time, Geralt will remark that it is indeed "noisy" at the cemetery, but the noises soon disappear.

Either way, the noises will appear again (only during the night) and this time it's clear they come from the catacombs. If you use your Witcher Senses, the source of the sound waves will be quite obvious, but otherwise you may encounter two separate groups of grave robbers, one of which is part of the treasure hunt quest The Last Exploits of Selina's Gang and killing them may start it. However, Geralt will remark that they are not the cause.

Once you reach the correct room (immediately left from the catacombs entrance), Geralt will remark on how strange it is that no one is there. You can use your witcher senses to examine a few things, one of which is a real clue, though it doesn't matter and Geralt will decide that it must not be the right place. However, as soon as he leaves the noises will start again, and clearly coming from that same room. Yet, inside it's still empty and Geralt will decide it's best to hide somewhere to find out what is happening. Look for a spot behind the statue to interact with and Geralt will wait there.

Soon two spirits will appear and bicker like an old married couple, which in fact they were. The spirits in question are Louis de Corentin an addicted gambler, and Margot de Corentin a devotee of Lebioda. Geralt will have to pick one of their urns to move, but they both seem to have a legitimate claim to the crypt and both promise some hidden Gwent cards as a reward. Although you can't know that yet, one of them is lying and will offer a different reward afterwards, so read below first if you want to make your choice based on that.

Side with Margot[]

Pick up Louis' urn and he will ask Geralt to place it in the private chambers of the "Gwent Friendship Society." The place is in the same catacombs nearby and you will encounter some grave robbers there, if you haven't been there yet. After disposing of them, place the urn on the altar where you'll also find the unique Ode to Gwent book. Then go back to Margot and she will tell you she hid the cards at the couple's home. Once you reach the house with the "tree sign" Geralt will remark that something isn't right as his medalion is reacting. Everything is locked though and you have to find a place to climb over and in - there are two of them, easy enough to find. Inside you will encounter an Archespore and after it's dead, check under the roses to find the cards.

However, the cards you receive are Barclay Els and Vampire: Bruxa, neither of which is possible to obtain more than once. Thus, if you already have them, you will receive nothing despite Geralt's satisfied comments. Loot the nearby chest for the garden key to let yourself out without climbing again.

Side with Louis[]

Pick up Margot's urn and she will ask Geralt to lay her remains at the grave of her mother, Michel'ine Belrose. Go to the Orlémurs Cemetery and find her grave near the tree Margot mentioned, in the southernmost corner. Place the urn there and return to Louis for your reward. However, he is nowhere to be found so Geralt decides to force him to appear, so you have to pick up his urn. Louis will appear and admit he doesn't know where the cards are, but will offer Geralt a sword that he won on a Gwent game from Trentin, but never got to pick up. As he explains, Trentin is also an addicted Gwent player and his wife would not be pleased if she heard he started again.

Find Trentin at his workshop and after a bit of "persuasion" he will give you the Forged in Fire sword (75XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level) and asks for a chance to get even by playing Gwent. You can agree or refuse to this, and only the journal entry will be different. The sword isn't on the line, only coin is, though if you're a Gwent addict yourself, this is your only chance to play Trentin.

Return to Lanzano[]

Regardless of who you helped, return to Charles for your reward. You will have two options now:

  • tell the truth and you'll receive 100XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level and 50 Oren3 (or the haggled amount)
  • say it was a difficult task and you'll only receive 50XP earned based on the Story and Swords! difficulty level, but double the coin

Important: If you tell the truth it will count as "Proof of Honor" for There Can Be Only One.

The quest completes as soon as rewards from both Charles Lanzano and the chosen de Corentin spouse are collected.

Journal entry[]

While strolling through Beauclair's charmingly romantic streets, Geralt learned of a circumstance thoroughly charmless and unromantic. Come night something was making much tastelessly grating noise at the city cemetery.
The witcher investigated and discovered that neither grave robbers nor necrophages were the source of the din. Rather, the ruckus was the work of a couple, the de Corentins. For as in life, so in death, they could not abide each other's company, causing much fear and confusion with their shrill disputes. Geralt concluded that separation was the sole sensible solution - he would have to remove one of their remains from the tomb they shared, transferring them elsewhere.
In the end the witcher brought the enduring martial dispute to a close, thus ending the nocturnal noise it entailed. He did so by transferring the urn containing Margot/Louis de Corentin's ashes to another crypt. Geralt could now look forward to the most pleasant stage of the contract - collecting his reward.

If Geralt moves Louis' urn:

This proved even more valuable than the witcher had initially supposed, for in addition to the payment he received from his employer, he also got a series of rare gwent cards from the grateful Margot de Corentin. How had the woman come into their possession? How else but by having concealed them from her gambling husband. Through naturally she had done this while they were both still alive.

If Geralt moves Margot's urn and refuses to play or wins against Trentin:

This proved even more valuable than the witcher had initially supposed, for in addition to the payment he received from his employer, he also got a splendid new sword from Louis de Corentin. Though in point of fact he collected the blade not from Louis but from an armorer whom Louis had once handily defeated at cards. Though to Geralt it was all the same.

If Geralt takes up Trentin's offer to play gwent and loses:

This would have proven even more valuable than the witcher had initially supposed, for in addition to the payment he received from his employer, he was also supposed to get a splendid sword from Louis de Corentin. Thus his adventure would have had a supremely happy ending, had he not allowed the armorer to talk him into a hand of gwent...

Notes[]

  • The grave robbers at the Gwent Friendship Society's chamber will always appear. However, the cutscene with them only triggers during this quest. If one sees them for the first time after completing the quest, they will not be hostile unless attacked.
  • During the closing conversation with Charles Lanzano, he will comment about a madman always shouting "Odrin, Ooodrin!", which is a reference to The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings regarding Odrin and his drinking buddies from In Cervisia Veritas.
  • If the quest is started directly by hearing the noises at the cemetery, upon leaving the crypt for the last time (i.e. after asking for the reward), a cutscene with a scared guard will play out, where he tells Geralt that Lanzano can pay him for the deed.

Trivia[]

  • At Orlémurs Cemetery, many of the tombstone inscriptions are references to both fictional and real people.
