The Troll of Flotsam was a troll who lived in the Flotsam forests with his wife. He maintained the bridge leading out of the trading post toward Aedirn.

Biography[]

The troll lived with his wife in the forest near Flotsam. He maintained the sole bridge leading out of the trading post toward the border with Aedirn, collecting tolls in exchange for passage. Usually, after a day of maintaining the bridge, he would return home to the smell of warm meat. This routine continued for a long time.

One day, however, after finishing his work on the bridge, he returned home to find no warm meat waiting for him. Instead, he discovered his wife dead—decapitated. Distraught, he turned to drinking, and the bridge fell into disrepair.

The troll's neglect did not go unnoticed by the inhabitants of Flotsam and Lobinden. Bernard Loredo, the trading post's commander, posted a contract on the troll, claiming that the creature was too dangerous to live so close to the town. In reality, Loredo was frustrated that the troll collected tolls but did not pay taxes on them. In contrast, Chorab, Lobinden's alderman, wanted the troll to stay, though he acknowledged the troll's drinking problem. The Witcher Geralt of Rivia took up the contract, speaking with both parties before seeking out the troll.

When Geralt first encountered him, the troll demanded a toll to cross the bridge. When the witcher pointed out the bridge's ruinous state, the troll became angry and aggressive. After a brief fight, the two began to talk.

If Geralt hears the troll out: Listening to the troll's story, Geralt offered to help resolve his troubles by tracking down his wife's killer. Later, the witcher returned with news—and something else. He had found the troll's wife's head and gave it back to him, informing him that her killer, a local thug named Dmitri, had been dealt with. Dmitri's body was left behind near the cemetery. Grateful, the troll vowed to stop drinking and rebuild the bridge.

If Geralt decides the troll is a threat: Reasoning that the troll was too dangerous, Geralt resumed the fight and killed him.

Journal entry[]

Like most of his kind, the troll living near Flotsam had built a stone bridge and demanded a toll from those crossing it. The folk of Lobinden quickly realized it was a preferable alternative to keeping the structure in good order themselves, so the troll's presence was not a problem for anyone. But, believe it or not, the troll took to drinking like the most degenerate hobo, thus proving that alcoholism is not unique to the more developed races.
A personal tragedy was behind the troll's drunkenness - the death of his wife. She had been killed by unknown assailants.
If Geralt chooses to help the troll:
Once the death of his beloved had been avenged, the troll pulled himself together, promising to rebuild the bridge and quit drinking.
If Geralt chooses to kill the troll:
Geralt did not think long and, in accordance with his profession, cut the troll down, ending this story.
