Tyrggvi Tuirseach was the jarl of An Skellig in the 10th century. He notably joined forces with Konung Harald the Cripple, giving birth to a centuries-lasting alliance between Clan Tuirseach and Clan an Craite.
Biography[]
Aiding the Cripple[]
A member of the ruling Tuirseach line, Tyrggvi was apparently given a name derived from Tyr—the semi-legendary son of Hemdall who founded his family. He eventually raised to be the jarl of An Skellig.
When the new King of the Skellige Isles Harald an Craite looked for allies in a war against Jarl Skjordal Drummond, Tyrggvi pledged his sword and all axes of Clan Tuirseach to the cause. His troops then boarded drakkars and sailed towards the southern Ard Skellig where the Drummond villages lay. It was a merciless war which ended in Drummond's devastating defeat. Tuirseachs amassed ample loot and sailed back home.
Legacy[]
Jarl Tyrggvi was glad for allying with King Harald, for in his eyes Tuirseachs and Craites finally united.[1] This turned out to be his lasting legacy, as the close ties between the two clans survived for more than three centuries.[2]
